Anti-Pilling
Anti-pilling is a fabric finish or yarn construction that keeps loose fibers from tangling into the small fuzzy balls that form on fleece and knit blends.
A fabric earns the anti-pilling label by passing an abrasion test, not by feel: mills run a swatch through a Martindale tester for anywhere from 2,000 to 30,000 rubbing cycles under ISO 12945 and count how many fiber balls survive on the surface afterward. The anti-pilling result itself comes from one of two fixes — a tighter, higher-twist yarn that sheds fewer loose fiber ends to begin with, or a chemical finish applied after knitting that binds those ends down before friction can tangle them into a ball.
It matters most on fleece and brushed knits, where the whole point of the fabric is a raised fiber surface — Port & Company's anti-pill fleece jackets and Independent Trading Co.'s heavier hoodies both market it specifically because a printed logo on a pilled fleece surface starts looking worn within a month. Poly-cotton blend sweatshirts pill faster than tight, single-fiber fleece because the shorter synthetic fibers break loose more easily under friction.
The finish isn't only a fleece concern — pique polos, sweater-knits, and poly-heavy blends all pill under the same friction mechanics, just less visibly than a napped fleece surface does. For any knit blend going into a program with repeat wear and washing, ask the mill whether anti-pilling is baked into the yarn or added as a finish, since the two hold up differently across a multi-year reorder cycle.
There's a persistent myth that 100% cotton never pills and synthetics always do. Cotton fibers break and shed off the surface, so cotton pills fall away on their own; polyester fibers are stronger and don't break, so the pills that do form cling stubbornly and look worse over time, even if fewer of them appear.
