Azo-Free Dyes
Azo-free dyes avoid the specific azo compounds that can break down into carcinogenic aromatic amines — a safety spec, not a measure of a dye's overall environmental footprint.
Azo-free dyes answer a narrower question than most buyers think they're asking. Azo dyes make up the majority of synthetic textile dyes in use because they're cheap, bright, and work across fiber types, but a subset of them can break down under reductive conditions — prolonged skin contact and sweat, for instance — and release aromatic amines, roughly two dozen of which are restricted in the EU as known or suspected carcinogens. "Azo-free" doesn't mean zero azo dyes were used anywhere in the recipe; it means none of those specific restricted, amine-releasing azo dyes were, since plenty of azo dyes never cleave into a listed amine at all.
This is the safety spec riding alongside an Oeko-Tex Standard 100 claim on a garment-dyed tee, since Oeko-Tex testing screens specifically for those restricted amines, typically down to a detection limit around 30 milligrams per kilogram, as one line item among many. A buyer asking if a shirt is azo-free is really asking whether the dye house tested for and excluded that restricted list, not whether azo chemistry was avoided outright.
Ask for the actual test report or certificate number rather than accepting the claim on a spec sheet alone, since the restricted-amine list and its detection threshold are what a compliance-minded retail buyer will check.
Buyers lump this in with "low-impact" or "eco-friendly" dyeing, and it's answering a different question entirely. Azo-free is a narrow chemical-safety spec about restricted compounds; a dye can be azo-free and still be a heavy, high-runoff process, or perfectly safe and still not carry a low-impact fixation claim.
