Burning a Screen
Burning a screen means exposing UV light through a film positive onto emulsion-coated mesh, hardening the design area so unexposed emulsion washes away to form a stencil.
Burning a screen turns a blank piece of polyester mesh stretched on an aluminum frame into a stencil the press can print through. A shop coats the mesh with liquid photosensitive emulsion, lets it dry in the dark, then sandwiches a black-and-white film positive against it in an exposure unit. UV light — usually two to six minutes under LED diodes or metal-halide bulbs — hardens every part of the emulsion the film doesn't block. A rinse under a water hose washes out the still-soft emulsion beneath the black ink, leaving open mesh in the exact shape of the artwork.
For the buyer, burning a screen is the step between an approved mockup and an actual test print, and it's why a shop can't just 'print the file' the day you approve art — every color in a design needs its own screen burned, dried, and checked before press day. A three-color logo on a run of Gildan 64000 tees means three separate screens, three exposures, and three chances for a pinhole or a soft edge if the emulsion coat ran thin.
Shop technique matters: coat thickness, dry time, and exposure length all have to match the mesh count — a 156 mesh screen for fine detail needs a tighter window than a 110 mesh screen loaded with heavy plastisol. Screens get reclaimed with stripping chemicals and burned for the next job, so a dialed-in exposure calculator turns jobs around faster than guesswork.
The common mix-up about burning a screen is picturing it like sending a file to a printer. Nothing runs through an inkjet at this stage — the film positive is opaque plastic, the exposure unit is just a UV light box, and the image only exists because chemistry hardens in some spots and rinses away in others.
