Closed-Loop Recycling
Closed-loop recycling turns old textile fiber directly back into new fiber of comparable quality, instead of downcycling it into rags, insulation, or landfill.
Closed-loop recycling is the fiber-to-fiber version of "recycled" — old garments or mill waste get shredded or chemically dissolved and re-spun into fiber good enough to make new fabric, rather than getting shipped off to become wiping rags or insulation batting. Most cotton recycling in the market today is the mechanical kind: shredding shortens the staple length and weakens the yarn, which is why recycled cotton is usually blended with virgin fiber, commonly in the 20-30% recycled range rather than sold pure. Newer chemical processes dissolve cotton cellulose into a pulp and re-spin it into fresh viscose-type fiber without that quality loss, which is closer to what "closed loop" is supposed to mean. The Global Recycled Standard certifies the recycled percentage and chain of custody either way.
We've had clients ask why their "recycled" hoodie still runs 70-80% virgin cotton — that's the mechanical-recycling ceiling talking, not a shortcut on the supplier's part. Brand take-back bins that collect old shirts for reprocessing are aiming at this loop, feeding worn garments back toward new fiber instead of a landfill.
Ask a supplier directly whether recycled content is pre- or post-consumer, and whether it's blended with virgin fiber — that tells you how closed the loop actually is versus how it's being marketed.
Buyers assume any "recycled" tag means true closed-loop recycling. Most recycled cotton on shelves right now is mechanically recycled and blended with virgin fiber, because scaled, quality-preserving fiber-to-fiber recycling is still the newer, pricier path, not yet the default one.
