Cover Sheet

A cover sheet is a non-stick Teflon or silicone-release sheet placed between the heat press platen and a design to protect it from scorching or shine.

A cover sheet is a reusable non-stick barrier — usually a 5-mil Teflon sheet or a silicone-coated release paper — laid over a transfer or a wet screen print before the heat press platen comes down. It keeps the hot metal platen from touching ink or film directly, spreading the press's heat evenly across the design while stopping ink, adhesive, or vinyl carrier from sticking to the platen itself. A good Teflon sheet holds up through 300-500 press cycles at 350-400°F before it needs replacing.

Every self-application instruction that ships with a DTF transfer or a printed heat transfer vinyl sheet tells the customer to use one, and for good reason — we've fielded plenty of calls about a shiny rectangle burned into the front of a shirt from someone who pressed bare metal straight onto polyester. The sheet diffuses direct platen contact just enough to prevent that telltale sheen mark, especially on dark or synthetic fabric where scorching and shine show up fastest.

Shops keep both Teflon, for high-heat and longer life, and cheaper parchment-style release paper, for lower-volume single-use runs, in rotation, matching sheet size to the print rather than the platen — an undersized cover sheet leaves platen edges exposed to bare fabric, which is exactly where press marks tend to show up first. Silicone-coated sheets also release more easily from puff or foil transfers than plain Teflon does.

Buyers assume any parchment paper or a spare pillowcase works as a substitute cover sheet; most household paper scorches, sticks, or transfers its own texture into the print under sustained heat press pressure. A true Teflon or silicone release sheet is engineered to survive repeated 350°F-plus contact without degrading — regular paper wasn't.
