Flame-Resistant (FR) Finish
A flame-resistant finish is a treatment or fiber blend that makes fabric self-extinguish rather than continue burning, required on many industrial workwear contracts.
Flame-resistant, or FR, fabric either won't burn to begin with — aramid fibers like Nomex, or modacrylic blends — or is 100% cotton treated with a topical finish such as Proban or Indura that reacts under heat to release flame-inhibiting compounds, causing the fabric to char and self-extinguish instead of continuing to burn once the ignition source is removed. Industrial contracts spec an FR finish against NFPA 2112 for flash-fire protection or ASTM F1506 for electric-arc exposure, and the treatment has to survive a set number of industrial launderings and still pass those ratings.
Oil and gas crews, utility linemen, and welders order branded FR shirts precisely because the fabric is doing safety work, not just carrying a logo — we've had a refinery contractor cut ties with a supplier over a single shirt that couldn't produce its FR certification paperwork.
The catch for decorators: adding anything to an FR garment can compromise the certification unless that addition was tested as part of the system. Standard plastisol ink can melt and drip under heat, potentially feeding a fire rather than resisting it, so FR-rated ink, FR-certified embroidery thread, and documentation proving the combination passed testing are all non-negotiable on these orders.
The confusion we run into most is a shop treating an FR order like standard workwear with a safety label slapped on afterward. A supplier who can't produce test documentation for their exact ink-and-garment combination shouldn't be decorating flame-resistant apparel, full stop — the liability sits with whoever applied the print, not just the mill that wove the fabric.
