Hotfix Rhinestones
Hotfix rhinestones are stones pre-coated with a heat-activated glue backing that melts under a heat press or wand, bonding to fabric without separate adhesive.
Hotfix rhinestones carry something plain rhinestones don't: a factory-applied glue backing baked onto the flat back of each stone, inert at room temperature until heat melts it into a bond — typically 300 to 375°F depending on whether the stone is glass or acrylic, held for 10 to 20 seconds by a heat press, hotfix wand, or heat gun. That heat-activated backing is what separates hotfix from plain flatback rhinestones, which need a separate liquid adhesive applied by hand, stone by stone.
This is the term buyers need the moment they're sourcing bling supplies themselves rather than ordering a finished transfer — a spiritwear customer bringing their own stones, or a dance-team parent asking about loose stones for a DIY costume, needs hotfix specifically, because plain flatback stones won't bond under a heat press at all. Glass hotfix stones, usually Preciosa or Swarovski-grade, hold color and shine longer than acrylic and cost noticeably more per gross.
Pros match stone material to press temperature carefully: acrylic hotfix stones can cloud or discolor above roughly 300°F, so a design mixing acrylic and glass stones has to be pressed at the lower of the two limits, not the higher. Stone size is specified in ss units — ss6 through ss34 cover nearly every apparel use, with ss10 and ss16 the two most common sizes for lettering.
Not every rhinestone pressed onto a heat press is hotfix, whatever the buyer assumes when they bring their own stones. Costume-grade flatback stones without a glue backing will sit under heat and pressure and simply fall off the moment the shirt moves — there's no adhesive to activate. If a stone doesn't have a visible glue coating on the back, it isn't hotfix, and it needs a separate glue step to stay put.
