Index Separation

Index separation is a screen-print method that converts artwork into a fixed palette of solid colors arranged in a repeatable dot pattern, built for consistent multi-run reproduction.

Index separation breaks detailed, photo-like artwork into a limited set of solid ink colors, typically eight to twelve, then rebuilds shading and detail using patterns of tiny dots from that fixed palette instead of the smooth continuous-tone dithering a halftone separation uses. Because every dot in the file maps to one specific ink from a locked color index rather than a percentage of overlapping halftones, the exact same file reprints with the exact same dot pattern run after run.

For a buyer, this is the separation method a shop proposes when the art has fine detail — a portrait, a detailed mascot, a photo-realistic design — and the order will repeat across multiple print runs or vendors. We've handed a file separated this way to a second press operator eight months after the original run and gotten shirts close enough to hang side by side, something a manually rebuilt halftone job can't always promise.

Pros reach for index separation over simulated process when consistency across a long run or repeat orders matters more than squeezing out every last gradient nuance, since the fixed palette trades some subtlety for repeatability. It also tends to use fewer screens than a full simulated-process breakdown of the same image, which can shave real cost off complex art.

Buyers sometimes assume index separation means lower quality because it uses a smaller color set than simulated process. In practice it's a deliberate trade: slightly less photographic smoothness in exchange for a file that reproduces identically whether it's run this month or reordered next year on a different press.
