Mineral Wash
Mineral wash is a chemical finishing process that leaves a soft, mottled, weathered color effect on fabric without the harsh contrast of acid wash.
Mineral wash strips color chemically rather than mechanically — a light oxidizing agent, sometimes paired with a mild enzyme step, softens and mottles the dye without ever tumbling stones against the fabric. The result is a soft, cloudy fade with low contrast between light and dark areas, closer to a worn-in gray-black than the streaky highlights of a stone or acid wash.
It's become the default finish on premium streetwear blanks — mineral-washed fleece hoodies and heavyweight tees from brands chasing that already-broken-in look without the stiffness stone washing can leave behind. Because there's no physical abrasion, mineral wash keeps more of the fabric's original strength and drape intact, which is why it shows up on heavier 12+ oz fleece where stone washing would fight the loft of the fabric.
Spec mineral wash when the brief calls for subtlety — a barely-there fade that still reads as premium rather than distressed — and reserve acid or stone wash for a louder, more obviously worn effect. Ask the mill for a wash-fastness rating before committing to a large order; chemical exposure can affect how the finish holds up over repeated home laundering.
Buyers often lump mineral wash in with acid wash because both involve chemical color removal, but the finishes read completely differently on a rack — mineral wash is even and soft, acid wash is blotchy and high-contrast on purpose. Send a physical swatch before production; the two terms get used interchangeably online far more than they should.
