Plastisol Ink

Plastisol ink is PVC resin suspended in plasticizer that sits on top of fabric as an opaque film and only cures with heat, never by air-drying.

Plastisol ink is a suspension of PVC resin particles in a liquid plasticizer, with pigment mixed in for color. It never dries in open air the way paint does — left on a shelf, it stays wet and workable indefinitely, which is what makes it forgiving to print with. It only becomes a permanent, solid film once it hits curing temperature, around 320°F, where the resin and plasticizer fuse together across the surface of the fabric.

This is the ink under most screen-printed shirts already in your closet — the industry default because it's opaque enough to print bright colors on dark garments in a single pass and durable enough to survive years of washing on something like a 6.1 oz Gildan Ultra Cotton tee. When a buyer asks for a print that just looks and feels like a normal T-shirt graphic, plastisol is almost always the unspoken baseline they're picturing.

Printers reach for plastisol first because its working properties stay stable across humidity and temperature swings in a way water-based alternatives don't, and because it holds fine detail and solid opacity well. The trade-off is hand feel: it sits on top of the fibers rather than soaking into them, so a heavy multi-color print can feel noticeably thicker and stiffer than the shirt around it.

A common misconception is that plastisol contains latex or is somehow the same rubbery texture as an old-school vinyl decal. It's neither — the stiff, slightly raised hand people associate with older prints comes from ink laid down too thick, not from anything inherent to the chemistry itself.
