Push and pull compensation
Push and pull compensation is the digitizing adjustment that reshapes stitch outlines to counteract fabric distortion, so circles stay round and letters stay aligned after sewing.
Push and pull compensation is the digitizing fix for a simple problem: sew a perfect circle into knit fabric with no adjustment and it comes out an egg. Needle penetrations push fibers apart in the direction of the stitch and pull them together across it, so a shape digitized at exactly the dimensions in the artwork distorts once thread and tension get involved. Compensation values widen or narrow outlines by a tenth of a millimeter to a few tenths, direction by direction, so the finished shape lands where it's supposed to.
Buyers see the result of bad compensation more than they see the term itself — a logo where circular elements come out oval, or a wordmark where letters that were evenly spaced on screen end up crowding together on the shirt. This is especially visible in monogramming and small text, where a millimeter of drift is the difference between crisp and cramped.
Push and pull compensation isn't one-size-fits-all — it changes with fabric stretch, so the same logo digitized for a stable woven twill cap needs different compensation values than the identical file sewn on a stretchy jersey tee. A digitizer building a file meant to run on multiple garment types will often make separate versions rather than reuse one file everywhere.
The common mistake is blaming stitch quality when a shape comes out slightly off-round or off-center. Nine times out of ten that's a push and pull compensation problem baked into the digitized file, not an error at the embroidery machine, and it's fixed by redigitizing for the specific fabric.
