Quick-Dry

Quick-dry describes fabric, almost always polyester, engineered to evaporate moisture fast because the fiber itself absorbs less than 1% of its weight in water.

The physics behind quick-dry comes down to fiber chemistry more than any single finish: polyester has a moisture regain around 0.4%, meaning it barely absorbs water in the first place, versus roughly 7-8% for cotton. Fabric marketed as quick-dry usually pairs that low-absorbency polyester with a fine microfiber knit structure or a wicking treatment that spreads sweat across a wider surface area, so what little moisture there is evaporates fast instead of pooling under one wet patch.

This is the fabric behind race-packet tees and team uniforms from lines like Sport-Tek's PosiCharge, built from 100% polyester interlock specifically so a runner isn't carrying a cotton shirt's worth of absorbed sweat by mile three. Put a cotton tee through the same 5K and it holds moisture against the skin the whole race instead of releasing it.

Spec quick-dry poly for anything genuinely athletic — race shirts, team practice gear, gym merch — and steer clients who want that soft cotton feel toward a tri-blend compromise instead, since pure poly changes the printing math too. Quick-dry polyester runs a real risk of dye migration into plastisol ink under heat, so budget for low-bleed ink on any full-poly order rather than finding out at the press.

Buyers frequently treat quick-dry and moisture-wicking as the same claim, but they describe two different jobs. Wicking is about pulling sweat off the skin to the fabric's outer surface; quick-dry is about how fast that moisture then leaves the garment once it's there. A fabric can wick well and still dry slowly if the fiber itself holds onto water.
