Tubular Construction
Tubular construction knits a shirt body as one continuous cylinder on a circular knitting machine, eliminating side seams entirely and producing a boxier, straight-hanging fit.
Tubular construction knits the entire body of a shirt in one pass on a circular knitting machine, so the fabric comes off the machine already shaped like a tube with no seam down either side. The tube is simply cut to length, sleeves are set in, and the shirt is finished; there's no cut-and-sew step for the torso panels, which is what makes tubular construction cheaper and faster to produce.
This is how classic blanks like the Hanes Beefy-T and most Gildan G500 tees are built, and it's why they run boxier through the body with less waist taper than a side-seamed Next Level or Bella+Canvas style. A buyer ordering 500 tubular tees for a fun run gets a consistent, roomy fit across sizes, but a buyer trying to match a fitted mockup from a side-seamed sample will be disappointed by the difference.
Choose tubular construction when cost per piece matters more than tailored shape (fundraisers, giveaways, back-of-house crew shirts) and reserve side-seamed blanks for retail racks or fitted programs. Because no seam breaks up the torso, tubular blanks also give a screen printer a completely flat, uninterrupted surface for oversized front prints.
Some buyers think tubular means low quality, but plenty of heavyweight, long-staple cotton blanks are built tubular too. The construction method is about shape and cost, not fiber quality or durability.
