Waffle Knit (Thermal)
Waffle knit (thermal) is a knit fabric with a raised honeycomb grid that traps air for warmth, common in henleys and base-layer tees.
The honeycomb grid of waffle knit — sometimes labeled thermal on a spec sheet — comes from a knit structure that alternates raised and recessed stitches in a checkerboard pattern, creating small pockets that trap body heat. Weights typically fall in the 5-6.5 oz range, light enough for a henley or base layer but textured enough to change how it behaves under a print head.
Buyers request waffle knit constantly for layering pieces — henleys, thermal crews, the shirt worn under a flannel — because the texture reads rugged and cold-weather-ready even before anyone touches the fabric. It's a look customers ask for by name now, not just a fabric a shop happens to stock.
That same raised grid is what makes clean printing hard: a screen only makes solid contact with the peaks of the weave, so ink skips the recessed squares and the print comes out with a broken, dotted texture instead of a flat fill. Some brands lean into that as a distressed effect; others need it minimized with extra ink deposit and a firmer squeegee pass. Embroidery sits on top of the texture rather than fighting it, so it's usually the safer call for fine detail.
Set expectations before the job runs, not after: a customer who wants a smooth, solid-color print on waffle knit the way they'd get on a jersey tee needs to hear up front that the grid will show through the ink, because it's baked into the fabric, not a printing defect.
