CMYK

CMYK is the cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink model that DTG, DTF, and sublimation printers physically mix to produce color on a garment.

CMYK stands for cyan, magenta, yellow, and key — the industry term for black — and it's a subtractive model: each ink absorbs light rather than emitting it, so layering more ink makes a color darker, and combining all four heavily approaches black. That's the opposite of RGB, the red-green-blue model a monitor or phone screen uses, where combining full-strength red, green, and blue light produces white. Every DTG press, DTF printer, and sublimation system on a shop floor mixes color through those same four channels at heart, no matter what color space the artwork was designed in.

Because the two models work in opposite directions, the CMYK gamut is smaller than what a screen can display — certain neon greens, electric blues, and hot magentas that look normal in a logo file simply don't exist as combinations of four process inks. A brand's on-screen color and its printed color can diverge noticeably, and that gap has nothing to do with a printer malfunctioning.

Pros convert or soft-proof artwork to CMYK early in a job rather than waiting until output, and some digital presses add extra ink channels — white for underbase, or a fluorescent — specifically to close some of that gap. RIP software handles the actual conversion from screen values to ink percentages and applies an ICC profile so the translation stays predictable print to print.

Customers who submit an RGB file and expect a pixel-perfect on-screen match are asking for something CMYK printing structurally can't guarantee. A physical proof, not a screenshot, is the only way to confirm a saturated brand color before a full run.
