Color Gamut

Color gamut is the full range of colors a given printer, ink, and fabric combination can physically produce, which is narrower than the colors a screen can show.

Every printing setup — a DTG press, a DTF roll printer, a sublimation system — has a fixed color gamut determined by its ink set and the substrate it's printing onto. Plot that gamut against a screen color space like sRGB and it comes out visibly smaller, especially at the saturated edges: neon greens, hot pinks, and electric blues that a monitor renders easily often sit entirely outside what four process inks can mix on fabric.

Color gamut isn't fixed across every job, either. A white poly-blend blank reproduces color differently than a heather or a dark garment printed over a white underbase, and adding ink channels — an extra white, or a wide-gamut ink set — stretches the boundary somewhat, though even a well-tuned DTG or DTF setup still can't hit true fluorescent brightness the way a dedicated fluorescent screen ink can.

We run test swatches before any job built around a brand's neon or ultra-saturated logo color, because a client's screen file will always look more vivid than what four-color digital printing can put on a shirt. Setting that expectation before the press run avoids a disappointed customer holding a slightly duller garment next to their laptop screen.

Buyers commonly assume a printer can match any screen color as long as the file is set up correctly. Color gamut is a physical property of the ink and substrate, not a software setting — no amount of file adjustment gets a CMYK print past the hard edge of what those four inks can mix.
