Discharge Agent (Activator)

A discharge agent, or activator, is the chemical, typically a zinc-based reducing compound, mixed into ink to trigger the discharge printing reaction.

Discharge agent, also called activator, is the reducing chemical — most commonly a zinc-based sulfoxylate or a newer zinc-free sulfinate alternative — mixed into a discharge base right before printing to make the ink actually strip dye out of the fabric during cure. Without it, a discharge base is just a soft clear ink; the agent is what triggers the chemical reaction against the garment's dye molecules once heat hits it.

This is why discharge orders run on a clock most standard plastisol jobs don't: once activator is mixed in, the ink typically has a pot life of only 24-48 hours before it loses enough potency to discharge reliably. We mix discharge ink the morning of a run, never the night before, because activated ink left sitting over a weekend has burned an entire order before on us with weak, patchy discharge.

Shops buy discharge agent separately from the base ink and mix it fresh per job rather than stocking pre-activated ink, tracking mix dates closely on anything left over. Good ventilation is non-negotiable in that press area — the sulfur compounds in most activators give off a distinct rotten-egg smell during curing that lingers until the garment's first wash neutralizes it.

New shop owners sometimes assume discharge ink comes pre-mixed and shelf-stable like plastisol. Activated discharge ink is a perishable product with a real expiration clock, and printing with stale, weakened activator is the single most common reason a discharge job comes out blotchy instead of clean.
