DTF Adhesive Powder (Hot-Melt)

DTF adhesive powder is a hot-melt polyurethane powder shaken over wet-printed film that, once cured and pressed, bonds the ink layer permanently to fabric.

After a DTF printer lays down white ink and CMYK color onto PET film, the sheet passes over an adhesive powder shaker while the ink is still wet, so the fine polyurethane granules stick evenly across every printed area and nowhere else. A curing oven or heat tunnel then melts that powder into a smooth film at around 300-320°F, which is what fuses to the garment fabric when the heat press comes down — no powder, no bond, regardless of how good the printed artwork looks.

This is the layer that gives DTF prints their signature stretch and softness compared to older transfer methods, and it's why a Bella+Canvas 3001 tee with a DTF print can stretch across a wearer's chest without the design cracking the way a stiff plastisol transfer might. We've had adhesive powder go stale on us after sitting open in a humid stockroom for a few months — it clumped, coated unevenly, and left transfers with dry patches that peeled at the first wash, so now we keep it sealed with silica packs and rotate stock.

Pros buy adhesive powder rated by particle size and hot-melt versus cold-peel formulation, matching it to their printer's shaker and their typical fabric mix; finer powder gives softer hand-feel on lightweight tees, while a coarser grade holds up better on heavier fleece that takes more abuse in the wash. Storage matters as much as the powder itself, since humidity is the enemy of an even coat.

A common mistake buyers make is assuming all DTF transfers are equally durable — the adhesive powder quality and cure are what actually separate a print that survives 50 washes from one that starts flaking after five, and it's invisible on the film until it's already on the shirt.
