Wash Fastness
Wash fastness is a print's ability to hold its color, adhesion, and edges through repeated home laundering without cracking, fading, or peeling off the garment.
Wash fastness gets measured in cycles — a print rated to survive 25 to 50 industrial or home wash cycles without visible cracking, and testing labs follow standards like AATCC 61 that put finished garments through accelerated wash-and-dry loops to grade color loss and adhesion failure on a numeric scale. For digital prints specifically, wash fastness depends on ink type, cure or bond quality, and how well the print layer flexes with the fabric instead of sitting rigid on top of it and cracking under stretch.
This is the spec that separates a print buyers wear for a season from one that starts flaking after the third wash, and it's largely invisible until someone actually launders the shirt — you can't tell wash fastness by looking at a fresh print off the press. On a batch of DTG hoodies we shipped last winter, one customer reported cracking after four washes; it turned out an under-cured pretreatment step, not the ink itself, was the real culprit, which is why we now temp-log every DTG cure cycle.
Pros build wash fastness into their process rather than testing it after the fact: correct cure temperature and dwell time on heat-applied prints, proper pretreatment and full cure on DTG, and washing a sample piece inside-out in cold water before greenlighting a full production run. Recommending inside-out, cold-water washing on the care label also meaningfully extends any print's real-world life, digital or otherwise.
A common mistake buyers make is blaming the printing method itself — DTF, DTG, or sublimation — when a print fails early, when the actual cause is almost always an under-cured or underdwelled print rather than the method being inherently weak. A properly cured DTF or DTG print, washed correctly, should outlast the shirt's own fabric well before the print gives out.
