Durable Water Repellent (DWR)
Durable Water Repellent is a fluoropolymer or silicone coating on outerwear fabric that makes water bead and roll off instead of soaking into the shell.
Durable Water Repellent, or DWR, is a fluoropolymer or silicone finish applied to the face fabric of a jacket shell that lowers its surface tension enough for water to bead up and run off rather than wet out the fibers. It's tested with a spray rating under AATCC 22, scored from 0 to 100 based on how much of a test pattern beads versus soaks in. DWR is a surface treatment, not a waterproof barrier — a separate PU coating or laminated membrane, taped at the seams, is what actually stops water from getting through; DWR just keeps the outer face from soaking it up and getting heavy in the meantime.
This shows up on the soft-shell jackets and rain shells that go through embroidery and screen print programs constantly — Port Authority and North End both build DWR into their branded outerwear lines, and it's one reason those jackets shed a drizzle at a fall trade show without anyone reaching for an umbrella.
Decorating a DWR jacket takes some care: the slick, treated face fabric doesn't take screen print ink the way an untreated tee does, so most decorators embroider the logo instead, or use a specialty adhesive backing for heat-applied vinyl. Heat from a heat press can also degrade the DWR coating locally around the decoration if the dwell time and temperature aren't dialed in for that specific shell fabric.
DWR wearing off surprises a lot of jacket buyers who expect it to last the life of the garment. It wears down with abrasion, washing, and UV exposure, and needs reactivating — usually a warm dryer cycle or a wash-in treatment — well before the jacket itself is worn out.
