Nylon

Nylon is a synthetic fiber known for strength and a slick, low-friction surface, common in jackets and bags, that requires specialized inks or transfers to hold a print.

Nylon's tightly woven filament surface is smoother and less absorbent than cotton or poly-cotton weaves, which gives jackets and bags their durability and water resistance but leaves standard plastisol ink almost nothing to grip. Without help, ordinary ink cures on top of the fabric instead of bonding into it, and it can crack or peel off in sheets after a handful of wears or washes.

It's everywhere in outerwear and bag orders — windbreakers, duffel panels, tote straps — and we quote those jobs differently the moment "nylon" shows up on the spec sheet. We've watched a customer-supplied nylon jacket run come back to us after another shop's standard plastisol flaked off within a month; the fix on the reprint was a nylon-catalyst additive mixed into the ink, not a different design.

Screen printers add a nylon catalyst, a bonding agent, to plastisol to chemically key the ink into the fabric, or switch to a heat-transfer vinyl or DTF transfer designed for synthetic shells, which sidesteps the adhesion problem entirely. Low-temperature transfer methods also help avoid scorching nylon's finish under the press.

The mistake buyers make is assuming a nylon jacket prints like a cotton hoodie with the same ink and the same quote. The fabric change means a different ink system or transfer method, and that's exactly the surprise that shows up on the invoice if it isn't flagged upfront.
