Pigment Ink
Pigment ink is inkjet ink made from solid ground color particles bonded to a fiber's surface with a binder, rather than dye that dissolves into the material.
Pigment ink carries its color as finely ground solid particles suspended in a liquid carrier, and a binder locks those particles onto the fabric surface once the ink is cured. That's a different mechanism than a dye, which dissolves and diffuses into a material the way sublimation dye works into polyester. DTG and DTF printers both run pigment-based inks — typically CMYK plus a dedicated white channel — because solid pigment particles resist UV fading and repeated washing far better than dissolved dye does.
That durability is why a DTG hoodie holds its color through a season of wear while a cheap dye-based inkjet transfer fades to a ghost of itself within a handful of washes. Properly cured pigment ink on a cotton tee routinely survives 50-plus home washes without meaningful color loss, assuming the shop hit both the right cure temperature and dwell time on the way out the door.
Pros treat cure as the make-or-break step, not the ink chemistry — an under-cured pigment print looks identical to a properly cured one on day one and only reveals the problem in a wash test, when the binder never fully set and the ink starts cracking or lifting. Shops that care about repeat business run wash tests on new garment or ink combinations before committing to a bulk run.
A common misconception is that "pigment ink" automatically means permanent or waterproof. It still needs correct heat-curing to bond the binder to the fiber; rush that step and even genuine pigment ink washes out fast, durability claims notwithstanding.
