Plastisol Transfer

A plastisol transfer is plastisol ink screen printed onto release paper and cured, then bonded to a garment later with a heat press instead of a screen.

A plastisol transfer starts on a screen printing press just like a direct print, except the ink lands on siliconized release paper instead of a garment. The plastisol gets gelled at a lower temperature, roughly 270 to 300°F, just enough to set the ink without fully curing it, and the sheets are stacked and shipped or stored until a heat press finishes the job later at 320 to 340°F for about 8 to 10 seconds.

This is how a shop hands a customer true screen-printed ink, full opacity, the same soft or thick hand as a direct print, on an order too small to justify burning screens for four colors. We keep plastisol transfers on hand for exactly this reason: a tour merch reorder mid-run or a last-minute addition to a team order gets the identical print without setting foot near the press room again.

Because the ink is already cured onto paper, transfers store flat for months as long as they're kept away from heat and direct sun, which lets a shop batch-run a design once and apply it to garments as orders trickle in over a season. Minimum quantities on transfer jobs typically run lower than direct screen printing, often 12 to 24 pieces versus 24 to 48, since the screen setup cost spreads across a larger transfer print run instead of one order.

Buyers sometimes assume a plastisol transfer is a lesser substitute for a direct screen print, but the ink itself is identical; the real quality variable is which transfer type gets used. A full transfer leaves the entire ink film on the garment while a hot split transfer peels away half of it on purpose, and that distinction affects hand-feel far more than transfer versus direct printing does.
