Softener Additive

Softener additive is a chemical printers blend into plastisol ink to cut its plasticky feel and leave a softer hand on the finished print.

Softener additive typically goes in at low ratios, around 2% to 5%, mixed directly into plastisol without diluting color or opacity the way extender base does. It works on the ink's plasticizer system to reduce surface tack and stiffness after cure, so the print flexes with the fabric instead of sitting as a rigid film on top of it.

This is the additive behind the answer every printer reaches for when a buyer asks whether a design can feel softer, it's the quickest fix available before switching to a whole different ink system like high solids acrylic. On a tri-blend tee, where the fabric already has a soft drape, a stiff plastisol print stands out immediately; softener additive closes that gap without reformulating the entire ink.

Shops use softener additive selectively, too much can slow cure slightly and soften the print past the point of good washability, so it's usually capped around 5% for anything going through repeated commercial laundering. It's a cheaper lever than switching ink families whenever a client wants less rubbery hand without a full water-based conversion.

Buyers sometimes think softener additive changes what the ink is made of; it doesn't remove plastic content, it modifies surface feel, so a print can read soft to the touch while remaining full plastisol underneath.
