Thread weight
Thread weight is a thickness rating for embroidery thread, with lower numbers meaning thicker thread — 40wt is the industry standard, 60wt runs fine detail.
Thread weight measures thread thickness on an inverse scale: the lower the number, the thicker the strand. Standard embroidery machines are calibrated around 40wt thread as the default for logo fill and lettering, while 60wt — noticeably thinner — is the go-to for small text, fine outlines, and detailed artwork where a heavier strand would clog and blur the shapes together.
This matters most when a design has text under about a quarter-inch tall, like a garment care instruction, a small monogram, or fine linework in a crest logo — try to run that at 40wt and the letters merge into an illegible blob. Digitizers routinely rebuild small-text designs specifically at 60wt with tighter stitch settings just to keep individual letterforms readable at that scale.
Pros pick thread weight based on the smallest detail in the design, not the overall logo size — a large logo with one tiny line of fine print still needs 60wt for that line even if the rest runs fine at 40wt. Machines need to be tensioned differently for each weight, so switching mid-run between wide fill areas and fine detail sections takes real setup time, which is part of why detailed small-text designs cost more to digitize and run.
Buyers sometimes assume thread weight is just a preference, like picking a font, when it's really tied directly to what the design can physically hold at a given size. If small text is coming back blurry or filled-in on a proof, that's usually a thread-weight and stitch-density problem to flag with the digitizer, not something to fix by simply re-stitching the same file.
