Tumble Dry Low
Tumble dry low is the dryer setting under about 135°F that keeps plastisol, DTF, and vinyl prints from cracking and stops cotton from shrinking further.
Tumble dry low is the setting that keeps a home dryer under roughly 135°F (57°C), well below medium’s 150°F and high’s 165°F-plus. That threshold sits close to where plastisol ink film starts to soften and lose its bond to the fibers it’s cured into, and well under the 300°F-plus a heat press uses to cure that same ink in the first place. Cotton behaves the same way: sanforizing (mechanical pre-shrinking at the mill) only locks in so much stability, and every hot dryer cycle above that line pulls a little more residual shrinkage out of the goods.
For a shop running plastisol on a Gildan 5000 or a DTF transfer on a Bella+Canvas 3001, that care label is doing real work, not covering legal bases. Run either through a laundromat dryer on high a dozen times and the print alligator-cracks along the fold lines while the shirt comes back visibly shorter than its tag size. We’ve had customers mail back “defective” shirts that turned out fine — the culprit was a roommate’s apartment dryer stuck on high heat for three straight cycles.
Shops spec tumble dry low on the care label for anything printed with plastisol, DTF, or standard vinyl, and step down further — hang dry only — for puff ink, foil, and glitter HTV, which scorch and delaminate at even lower temperatures. If one design mixes decoration types, the label should follow whichever technique is least heat-tolerant, not the fabric’s own limit.
The mistake we hear constantly: buyers treat tumble dry low as boilerplate nobody follows, then blame the printer when a design cracks after a few normal washes. It’s a real spec tied to a real ink-softening temperature, not a suggestion — skip it, and the shirt pays for it in the dryer, not on the press.
