Under-Curing
Under-curing is a plastisol print that never reached full cure temperature, leaving ink that cracks, fades, or washes off within the first few launderings.
A plastisol print is under-cured any time the ink's internal temperature falls short of the resin's cross-linking point, commonly 320°F held for about a minute, even if it looks perfectly dry coming off the dryer. Plastisol can feel tack-free and printable well below full cure, which is exactly what makes the defect so easy to miss on a busy production floor. Confirming cure means a wash test or a direct temperature reading on the ink film, never a finger touch.
For the buyer, under-curing is the single most common reason a custom shirt looks flawless at pickup and falls apart in the laundry three weeks later, ink cracking along fold lines, colors fading unevenly, whole sections lifting off in sheets after one hot wash. It shows up worst on heavy ink deposits over dark garments and on rush jobs where belt speed got pushed to hit a deadline. We once had a customer return an entire run of 300 hoodies because the shop had sped up the belt to clear a backlog, and every single print failed the wash test.
Ask any printer running a rush job how they protect cure quality when belt speed increases, the honest answer involves raising dryer temperature to compensate or running a second pass, not crossing fingers. A quick wash-and-scratch test on a sample before committing to five hundred shirts catches under-curing before it becomes a return.
Buyers often blame the ink itself for cracking prints, but the ink is rarely the culprit, the dryer simply never got hot enough, long enough, on that particular garment.
