Vat dye
Vat dye is an insoluble dye class — indigo is the best-known member — chemically reduced into the fiber for exceptional colorfastness on heavyweight and workwear fabrics.
Vat dye starts out insoluble in water, so mills first chemically reduce it into a soluble form, soak it into the fiber, then oxidize it back to its original insoluble pigment once it's locked inside the fabric. That reduction-oxidation cycle is the same chemistry behind traditional indigo denim dyeing, and it's what gives vat dye its reputation: wash-fastness and light-fastness ratings that beat almost every other dye class, often 4 to 5 on the AATCC scale even after years of wear and sun exposure.
That's why 100% cotton duck canvas jackets and heavyweight indigo denim hold their color through job-site laundering cycles that would strip a cheaper dye in a season. Vat dye shows up on premium heavyweight blanks and workwear-grade goods more than on $4 promo tees, since the dyeing process itself is slower and more labor-intensive than reactive or direct dyeing. We've had embroidery clients spec vat-dyed canvas specifically because the garment gets laundered industrially between shifts, and lesser dye jobs go patchy within months under that kind of use.
Reach for vat-dyed fabric when a garment's life includes repeated commercial laundering, sun exposure, or both — uniforms, outdoor gear, anything that can't afford visible fading. It costs more, and that cost is the point.
Buyers sometimes read "vat-dyed" as a marketing flourish rather than a real process difference. It isn't interchangeable with piece-dyed or garment-dyed language, and a supplier who can't say which dye class they're using probably isn't using vat dye at all.
