Reflective Ink
Reflective ink is a screen printing ink loaded with glass microbeads or metallic flake that bounces light straight back at its source in darkness.
Reflective ink carries thousands of tiny glass microbeads, or in some formulas a fine aluminum flake, suspended in a plastisol or resin base. When headlights, a phone flash, or a streetlamp hit the print, the beads bend that light and send it back the way it came instead of scattering it — the retroreflective effect that makes a jogger's chest logo suddenly flare white in a driver's headlights at night. It prints through a coarser mesh, usually 86-110, since the bead particles won't pass through anything tighter, and it lays down thicker than a standard color hit.
This is the spec buyers reach for on safety vests, road-crew uniforms, cycling jerseys, and any 5K or night-run shirt where the brief includes visibility after dark. In ordinary daylight the print reads as flat, unremarkable silver-gray; it only performs its actual job once the ambient light drops and a beam hits it dead-on, which surprises clients expecting a shiny finish they can see any time of day.
Pros treat reflective ink as a functional add, not a decorative one — for real hi-vis compliance work they'll ask whether the job needs to meet an ANSI/ISEA 107 rating, which governs placement and coverage on certified safety apparel, versus a shirt that just wants some nighttime visibility for a race. Placement matters more than most colors: bands across the back, sleeves, or a chest logo catch a driver's headlights at the angles that count.
The common mistake is ordering reflective ink expecting it to look bright or colorful under normal store lighting. It won't, and it isn't supposed to; judge a proof by how it performs in a dark room under a direct light source, not how it looks on the shop counter.
